Remember MJ (Part 1)

About a year ago, DJ Jaycee (Of The Aphilliates & Ludacris's DJ) sent me this mix focusing on the early years of Michael Jackson. All I can say is that this is an excellent way to remember a musical genius. Enjoy!

12-3-91

For everybody out there who's never heard the Kid Capri tape where he disses Doo Wop, this is for you. It was Capri's last mix. At this time he had already released his debut album (which was produced by Biz Markie) and was catching wreck on 107.5 WBLS from Mondays to Thursday (I will be posting some of those mixes in the future).

Kid Capri -12/3/91

In case you missed it, this (1/1/92) was Doo Wop's response.

More Breaks

I finally got a chance to check out this mix of 80's breaks compiled by DJ Yoda (UK) & Tobes (from Spine Magazine) and it's dope! Sort of sounds like if DJ Spinbad had did an 80's version of Kid Capri's 52 Beats (minus the jugglin).

Questlove's Sample Mix

This was recorded a few years ago on Radio One.
I can't remember how I got this mix but it's dope!

God's Favorite DJ

Once again, it's the return of Mixtape Wednesdays. For this edition I'm posting a rare mix of Clark Kent spinnin some originals and r&b classics on Hot 97. This was when the station would let outside DJ's come in and do what they wanted without giving them a playlist during the mixmaster weekends.

Ron G - Mixes #12

According to Jadakiss in his 2004 interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, this mix is one of three mixtapes that every hip-hop fan should own. The only thing I can say is that I played the shit out of the mixtape back in '93... The mix posted is the cd version (Side B falls short)

DJ S&S & Craig G

For this week, I was planning to post "Niggaz Don't Give A Fuck" and talk about how Craig G was sort of a mentor when I moved to Brooklyn in the summer of '94. He was working in the basement of Music Factory (in Fulton Mall) and that had become my second home. Fam schooled me on how the mixtape game worked and how much politics were involved within the dj circuit and the music industry. A few months after meeting him, Funk Flex made him a member of The Flip Squad and Craig quit Music Factory. After that, he dropped several dope mixes including this collaberation with S&S...

Earlier today, I listened to the cassette and realized that I had taped over a majority of it, so as a plan B, here's a gem from another good friend of mine... Courtesy of the Know Good Music Blog.

DJ Clue

Yup, it's been a minute since I've posted some mixtapes. Now since it's still spring I've decided it's time to give Clue some shine. When he dropped volume 1 of the Springtyme Stick Up Series in 1995, he was officially crowned the number #1 mixtape DJ in New York City...

This was also recorded in '95 (before Spring Tyme Stick Up).

PS - Springtyme Part's 2 & 3 will be posted next year since they came out in '96. Maybe I'll post Scarecrow's B-Day soon...

The Diddy / R&B Classics Mix

Back in 2005, while I was spinnin The CFDA Awards after-party at Bungalow 8, someone from Bad Boy approached me and told me that Diddy wanted a mixtape of what I was spinnin that night. I found it kind of weird because I played his CFDA Awards after-party a year earlier at Marquee and got a bad review (I think it was because I was wearing a Polo T-Shirt). Anyhow, a few weeks later I got a call from Bad Boy requesting for the mix again cuz Diddy was in St Tropez and wanted something to listen to. Later that night I linked up with El Saeso at La Esquina and we ran over the Williamsburg Bridge into Brooklyn to the Manhattan Bridge and back into the city. This was my first case of catching a runner's high and I couldn't go to sleep. What I did instead was record this. Enjoy...

The Cipha Sounds Post

Since everybody and their grandmother has a blog now, it's only right to give props to the few that are worth checking. In case u don't know who Cipha is... He came up under Dj Riz. Got his start working on the Wildman Steve show on 90.3. Worked at Fat Beats. Linked up with Funk Flex and Jessica Rosenblum. Went on tour as Lil Kim's DJ. Worked as an A&R at Rawkus (where he took pride in clowning everybody except me) and later at The Neptunes label Star Trak.

From Monday to Friday, u can catch him hosting the morning show on Shade 45. On Saturdays he's does the More Fiyah mix on Hot 97 and in between all of that, he's the host for Sucker Free. Oh yeah, he also has a record label and a monthly comedy show. The pic above was taken a year and half ago. As I was walking into the dj booth at Deep, homeslice was in the corner sleeping while DJ AM was spinnin and if you know AM, you know the monitor was on full blast! To this day I never understood how he was able to sleep thru all of that noise but after seeing how busy he is, it all makes sense.

PS - He's posted a few mixtapes over on his blog (Mixes 8 by Ron G and another joint by G-Bo Da Pro & Double R). Good luck e-digging!

Doo Wop Vs. Kid Capri

Oh shit... It's the return of mixtape Wednesdays!

Before we get into it, check out this interview with Doo Wop where he talks about his career and feud with Kid Capri, which helped Wop establish himself as a mixtape DJ back in the early 90's. Now if u never knew about the beef, listen to the intro of side A.

Doo Wop - 1/1
(Side B)

Side B brought back a lot of memories from 1991. The movie Juice, Lord Finesse on the mic, Public Enemy still catching wreck, O.P.P. crossing over, Jeff Redd on the soundtrack for Strictly Business & that fucking video for Michael Jackson's "Remember The Time."

Enjoy! I'm out...

Oh yeah, big shouts to Colin for coming thru! Next week, I might post another Ron G mixtape... Maybe Mixes 12 or 13... We'll see... And remember children, these ain't just mixtapes, this is history!
